Irene joined our firm in 1988 and became a partner in 1994. She practices in the field of civil litigation, with a concentration on insurance defence and medical malpractice law, municipal and construction cases. She has been representing the interests of professional associations and insurance companies in the defence of medical malpractice claims and automobile and commercial claims for 25 years. Irene appears regularly in the Supreme Court Trial Division as well as the Court of Appeal.
Irene has a "Distinguished" Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating, a widely respected mark of achievement.
Irene has been selected by her peers for inclusion in the The Best Lawyers in Canada for each year since 2018. She was recognized in the 2020 edition in the practice areas of: Medical Negligence and Professional Malpractice law.
She holds a B. Comm. (Hons) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and an LL.B from The University of New Brunswick. In 1988 she was called to the bar.
She was appointed Queen's Counsel in September 2013.
Irene served 8 years as a Bencher of the Law Society and as President in 2009-2010. She is now an Honourary Bencher of the Law Society.
She also contributes to the legal profession as a presenter in the Civil Litigation Section of the Law Society's Bar Admission Course, and as a presenter in Seminars and Lectures in the area of Health and Insurance Law.
In her community efforts, Irene is a director and past Chair of the Rising Tide Theatre Association, a popular and well-known Newfoundland theatrical group.
Irene is a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
